Allegheny Mountain Dusky Salamander
Desmognathus ochrophaeus · also called mountain dusky salamander
Well up a forested Appalachian slope, far from any visible stream, an Allegheny Mountain dusky salamander moves through damp leaf litter, comfortable in habitat considerably drier and higher than most of its close dusky salamander relatives would ever attempt to occupy.
Overview
The Allegheny Mountain dusky salamander, Desmognathus ochrophaeus, is a small, variably patterned salamander native to forest habitat across a broad stretch of the Appalachian Mountains. Its tolerance for higher elevations and greater distance from permanent water than many dusky salamander relatives make it one of the more habitat-flexible members of its genus.
A dusky salamander that wandered from the stream
While most dusky salamanders stay tightly bound to stream margins, the Allegheny Mountain dusky salamander has pushed further into ordinary forest floor habitat, a shift made possible by an unusually brief aquatic larval stage that loosens its dependence on nearby water.
Status
Least Concern — widespread and common across suitable forest habitat throughout the Appalachian Mountains.
Allegheny Mountain Dusky Salamander: common questions
Why is the Allegheny Mountain dusky salamander found so far from streams?
An Allegheny Mountain dusky salamander is found farther from streams and other permanent water than many of its dusky salamander relatives, tolerating damp forest floor litter away from obvious water sources thanks to a comparatively short aquatic larval stage that reduces its dependence on nearby standing or flowing water.
How variable does this salamander's appearance get?
The Allegheny Mountain dusky salamander displays considerable variation in colour and pattern across its range, from plain tan or brown individuals to more distinctly marked ones with a row of paired spots, making appearance alone a less reliable identification feature than for some other salamander species.
How high up the mountains does the Allegheny Mountain dusky salamander range?
The Allegheny Mountain dusky salamander ranges to notably high elevations within the Appalachian Mountains, occupying cool, moist forest habitat well up mountain slopes, a tolerance for elevation shared with only some of its dusky salamander relatives.
Where does the Allegheny Mountain dusky salamander live?
The Allegheny Mountain dusky salamander is native to forest habitat across a broad stretch of the Appalachian Mountains, generally tolerating damp conditions away from permanent water more readily than several related species.
