The deathstalker is a small, pale, unremarkable-looking scorpion from the deserts of North Africa and the Middle East, and it carries the most dangerous venom in its group. That same venom is also one of the most valuable substances on Earth, because pieces of it are being turned into cancer-surgery tools.

Overview

Deathstalkers live in hot, dry country — desert, semi-desert, and arid scrub — from the Sahara across the Arabian Peninsula to Central and South Asia. They are nocturnal, spending the day in a crevice or shallow burrow and coming out after dark to hunt. They are small (5–8 cm), slender, and straw-yellow, which makes them easy to miss against sand and rock.

The venom

The deathstalker’s sting delivers a blend of neurotoxins that is, by weight, among the most potent of any scorpion. In a serious envenomation it produces intense local pain and then systemic effects: a racing heart, rising blood pressure, laboured breathing, and, in the worst cases, fluid on the lungs and heart or respiratory failure. The volume injected is tiny, though, so a healthy adult who receives prompt treatment almost always recovers fully. The people who die are overwhelmingly young children — for whom the dose is proportionally enormous — and the elderly or those with heart and lung disease.

Reading a scorpion

A rough guide: scorpions with big pincers and thin tails tend to subdue prey by force and have mild stings, while those with thin pincers and thick tails rely on venom. The deathstalker is a textbook example of the second type. Even so, every scorpion in the field should be treated as dangerous and left alone.

From weapon to medicine

Deathstalker venom is a library of small peptides, and several have medical promise. Chlorotoxin binds selectively to tumour cells; a synthetic version tagged with a fluorescent dye — “tumour paint” — lets neurosurgeons see the boundary of a brain cancer during an operation. Other venom components are being studied for autoimmune disease and malaria. Because the venom must be milked one droplet at a time, it is often listed among the most expensive liquids in existence.

Status

The deathstalker has not been assessed by the IUCN. It is common across a wide range, but it is heavily collected for the venom trade, and the long-term effect of that harvest on wild populations is unknown.

How dangerous is a deathstalker sting?

The deathstalker's venom is, drop for drop, among the most toxic of any scorpion, and its sting is a genuine medical emergency in the regions where it lives. It causes immediate severe pain, followed in serious cases by a surge in heart rate and blood pressure, difficulty breathing, fluid accumulation in the lungs, and, in the worst cases, cardiac or respiratory failure. However, the amount injected is small, and a healthy adult who gets prompt care — including antivenom where the reaction is severe — will almost always recover. The deaths that do occur are mostly among young children, in whom the same dose is proportionally far larger, and among people who are frail or have existing heart or lung disease.

It is frequently cited as one of the most expensive liquids in the world, with figures of thousands to tens of thousands of dollars per gram, because it must be collected one tiny droplet at a time from individual scorpions and because demand from research is high. The venom is a mixture of many small peptides, several of which have turned out to be medically useful. The best known is chlorotoxin, which sticks specifically to tumour cells; a lab-made version linked to a fluorescent dye — nicknamed "tumour paint" — lets surgeons see the edges of a brain cancer while operating. Other components are being investigated for regulating the immune system and for antimalarial activity.

How can you tell a deathstalker apart from a harmless scorpion?

A useful general guide for scorpions is to look at the pincers and the tail — species with large, robust pincers and a slim tail tend to rely on crushing and have mild venom, while species with thin, delicate pincers and a thick, muscular tail rely on venom and are the ones to respect. The deathstalker has notably slender pincers and a stout tail, is small (5 to 8 cm), and is a uniform pale yellow, sometimes with faint darker stripes. But this is only a rough rule; anyone in scorpion country should treat every scorpion as potentially harmful and never handle one.

Where does the deathstalker live and how does it behave?

It is a desert specialist found across North Africa, the Middle East, and into Central and South Asia, in hot, arid terrain with loose soil, rocks, and scrub. It is nocturnal, sheltering by day in a natural crevice or a short burrow it digs, and emerging at night to ambush insects and other invertebrates. It is not aggressive toward people and will not seek out a confrontation, but it is fast, easily provoked, and quick to sting when trapped against skin — which is why most stings happen when someone puts on a shoe, moves a rock, or reaches into a dark space without looking.
