Football-fish

Himantolophidae · also called footballfish

Least Concern carnivore Ocean

Round, spine-covered, and lit from a single glowing lure, a football-fish drifts through the darkest depths of the ocean, waiting for curious prey to approach a light its own body produces.

Overview

The football-fish, family Himantolophidae, is a round-bodied deep-sea anglerfish native to deep ocean habitat recorded across every major ocean basin. Its distinctive ball-like, spine-covered body, glowing bioluminescent lure, and free-living males set apart from more extreme anglerfish families make it one of the more recognisable deep-sea anglerfish groups found anywhere in the ocean.

A lure without the extreme cost

While several other deep-sea anglerfish families are famous for males that fuse permanently to a female, the football-fish’s males remain independent throughout their lives, showing that the glowing-lure hunting strategy does not always come paired with the more extreme reproductive trade-offs seen elsewhere in the group.

Status

Least Concern, though population trends remain largely unknown given the difficulty of surveying deep ocean habitat.

Football-fish: common questions

Why is it called the football-fish?

This family has a distinctively round, ball-like body covered in small, conical tubercles, a shape and texture distinctive enough to inspire the family's common name.

Do male football-fish fuse to females like some other anglerfish?

No, unlike some other deep-sea anglerfish families, males in this family do not permanently fuse to a female, instead remaining free-swimming and independent throughout their adult lives.

How does the football-fish catch its prey?

Females in this family carry a modified fin spine tipped with a light-producing organ, used to draw curious prey close in the total darkness of the deep sea before engulfing it whole.

How many species of football-fish are there?

This family includes roughly twenty recognised species, each adapted to a broadly similar deep-sea lifestyle with only subtle differences in lure shape and body markings between them.
