The golden poison frog is a small, brilliant-yellow amphibian that carries the strongest natural toxin of any animal. It hops openly across the rainforest floor in daylight, unafraid, because almost nothing that touches it survives — and it lives in just one small corner of Colombia.

Overview

Phyllobates terribilis is found only in a small area of humid lowland rainforest on the Pacific slope of Colombia, in the Chocó region — one of the wettest places on Earth. It is diurnal and terrestrial, foraging among the leaf litter for ants and other small invertebrates, and, unlike most frogs, it is bold and conspicuous, its bright uniform colour a warning that broadcasts its toxicity rather than hiding it.

The most toxic animal

The frog’s skin glands hold batrachotoxin, an alkaloid that jams open the sodium channels in nerve and muscle cells, causing uncontrollable firing followed by paralysis and cardiac arrest. A single wild frog may contain around a milligram — a dose lethal to ten or more people — and there is no antivenom. The toxin is potent enough that predators learn, or are genetically programmed, to avoid the colour entirely; one snake species has evolved partial resistance and is the frog’s only known predator.

Crucially, the frog does not synthesise the poison. It sequesters it from specific prey items in its native forest, concentrating dietary compounds in its skin. Frogs raised in captivity on standard feeder insects are completely harmless, and wild frogs lose their toxicity over time in a terrarium.

Poison darts

The frog’s common name reflects a real practice: the Emberá people of the Chocó used Phyllobates frogs to tip their blowgun darts, drawing a dart across the frog’s back to load it with toxin for hunting birds and monkeys. Only three of the roughly 200 poison-frog species were ever used this way, and P. terribilis is the most potent of them.

Reproduction

Despite the toxin, golden poison frogs are attentive parents. Females lay small clutches of eggs on the forest floor, and the male guards them, keeping them moist. When the tadpoles hatch, he lets them wriggle onto his back and carries them to a small pool of water — a water-filled leaf axil, a puddle, or a stream edge — where they complete development.

Threats and conservation

The golden poison frog is Endangered. Its toxin is no defence against deforestation: the Chocó rainforest is being cleared and fragmented for timber, agriculture, cattle, mining, and illegal cultivation, and the frog’s naturally tiny range leaves it with no buffer. Collection for the pet trade adds to the pressure, though widespread and successful captive breeding now supplies most hobbyist demand and reduces the incentive to take wild frogs.

How poisonous is the golden poison frog?

It is generally considered the most poisonous animal alive. A single wild adult carries roughly 1 milligram of batrachotoxin in its skin — enough, in principle, to kill 10 to 20 adult humans or a couple of African elephants. The toxin forces nerve and muscle sodium channels to stay open, causing paralysis and heart failure, and there is no antidote. It can be dangerous even to touch a wild frog if you have a cut, and simply handling one and then touching your mouth or eyes could be harmful.

Do these frogs make their own poison?

No — they acquire it from what they eat. Wild golden poison frogs sequester batrachotoxin (or its precursors) from certain small beetles and other leaf-litter invertebrates in their specific rainforest, concentrating it in glands in the skin. Frogs bred in captivity and fed on crickets and fruit flies never become toxic, and wild-caught frogs gradually lose their potency in captivity. The exact dietary source in the wild is still not fully identified.

Were golden poison frogs really used to poison blowgun darts?

Yes.
