The hellbender is a giant, ancient, entirely aquatic salamander that lives hidden under the rocks of fast Appalachian and Ozark rivers. It is one of only three giant salamander lineages left on Earth, and it is quietly vanishing as its clean-water habitat is lost.
Overview
Hellbenders live on the beds of cool, clear, swift, rocky streams and rivers in the eastern United States. They are nocturnal and secretive, spending the day wedged beneath a single large flat rock — often the same shelter rock for years — and emerging at night to hunt. An adult occupies a small home range and defends its shelter rock against other hellbenders.
Built for the river bottom
Everything about a hellbender’s shape suits life pinned to the substrate of a rushing stream:
- A flattened body and head that let it slip under rocks and reduce the push of the current.
- Loose, wrinkled folds of skin down each side that hugely increase the surface area available for absorbing oxygen from the water.
- Small, lidless eyes — the animal relies more on smell and on sensing water movement and vibration than on sight.
- Short, sturdy legs for crawling rather than swimming; it moves through open water with eel-like undulations only when it must.
Diet
Hellbenders are ambush and forage predators whose diet is dominated by crayfish, with small fish, aquatic insects, worms, snails, and amphibian eggs making up the rest. They hunt by scent and touch, sucking prey in with a rapid gape. They will also scavenge and, at times, eat the eggs of their own species.
Reproduction
Breeding happens in late summer and early autumn. A male excavates a nest cavity under a large rock and induces one or more females to lay strings of 150 to 400 eggs inside, which he fertilises externally. He then guards the clutch for one to two and a half months, fanning it with body movements to keep it oxygenated and defending it from predators — including egg-eating hellbenders — until the larvae hatch. The young keep external gills for a year or two before the adult skin-breathing takes over.
Threats and conservation
The hellbender is listed as Near Threatened, with the Ozark subspecies Endangered and reduced to a few hundred animals. The core problem is habitat degradation: sedimentation from land disturbance smothers the rocky riverbed, and pollution, dams, and rising water temperatures compound it. Conservation efforts include captive rearing and release (“head-starting”), the placement of artificial nest boxes, and — crucially — streamside habitat protection and erosion control to keep the rivers clean.

Why is it called a hellbender?
No one is certain. The most repeated explanation is that early settlers thought the wrinkled, writhing animal looked like "a creature from hell, bent on returning," or that its twisting movements when handled resembled "the tortures of the infernal regions." The many other folk names — snot otter, devil dog, Allegheny alligator, mud devil, lasagna lizard — show it has always unsettled people, though it is completely harmless.
Are hellbenders dangerous or venomous?
No. Hellbenders have no venom, they cannot seriously hurt a person, and they are not aggressive. They secrete a slippery, slightly noxious mucus that deters some predators and makes them hard to hold, which is where "snot otter" comes from, but they pose no threat to humans. They will bite if grabbed, like most wild animals.
How does a hellbender breathe underwater?
Through its skin. An adult hellbender gets around 90% or more of its oxygen by diffusion across the skin, particularly the loose, wavy folds along its sides, which it increases by rocking its body to move fresh water past them. Because skin-breathing only works in cold, fast, highly oxygenated water, hellbenders cannot survive in warm, still, or silty streams.
Why are hellbenders disappearing?
They are extremely sensitive to water quality, and their rivers have been degraded by silt from farming, logging, road building, and construction, which clogs the gaps between the rocks where they live and breed. Dams, pollution, warming water, disease including chytrid fungus, and collection for the pet trade have all added to the decline. Because hellbenders live so long and breed slowly, populations recover very slowly.
