Kalij Pheasant
Lophura leucomelanos · also called kalij pheasants
Scratching through leaf litter at a forest edge somewhere across its enormous range, a kalij pheasant might appear glossy blue-black or considerably paler brown depending on exactly which of its many subspecies calls that patch of forest home.
Overview
The kalij pheasant, Lophura leucomelanos, is a variably plumaged bird native to forest and mountain habitat across the Himalayas and South Asia, from Pakistan through to parts of Southeast Asia. Its unusually high number of recognised subspecies with strikingly different plumage, close relationship to the silver pheasant, and tolerance for disturbed forest conditions make it one of the most adaptable and geographically variable pheasants found anywhere in Asia.
One species, many looks
Few pheasant species show as much plumage variation across their range as the kalij pheasant, whose numerous subspecies can look different enough from one another that an untrained eye might easily mistake two of them for entirely separate species.
Status
Least Concern, remaining widespread across suitable forest and mountain habitat throughout the Himalayas and South Asia.
