Kuhli Loach
Pangio kuhlii · also called kuhli loaches, coolie loach
Squirming eel-like through a tangle of gravel and sunken leaf litter, a kuhli loach spends daylight hours pressed into hiding, only emerging to sift the substrate for hidden food once darkness settles over the water.
Overview
The kuhli loach, Pangio kuhlii, is a slender, nocturnal bottom-dweller native to slow-moving wetland and rainforest stream habitat across Indonesia, Malaysia, and neighbouring parts of Southeast Asia. Its unusually elongated, eel-like body, strongly nocturnal habits, and preference for the company of its own kind make it one of the more behaviourally distinctive small fish found within the diverse loach family.
A body built for squeezing through gravel
Where most loaches have a more conventional fish-shaped body, the kuhli loach’s slender, elongated form lets it squirm directly through gravel and dense leaf litter, a shape shared with only a handful of other loach species built for the same tight-quarters lifestyle.
Status
Least Concern, remaining widespread across suitable wetland and rainforest stream habitat throughout Indonesia, Malaysia, and neighbouring Southeast Asia.
Kuhli Loach: common questions
Why does my kuhli loach hide all day?
This species is strongly nocturnal, spending most of the daylight hours hidden within gravel, leaf litter, or other cover and becoming considerably more active once darkness falls, so a lack of daytime activity is completely normal rather than a sign of poor health.
How is the kuhli loach different from other loaches?
This species has a slender, elongated, almost eel-like body quite different from the deeper-bodied shape typical of many other loach species, an adaptation well suited to squirming through gravel and dense leaf litter rather than swimming freely in open water.
Should kuhli loaches be kept alone or in groups?
This species is considered a social fish that generally fares better and behaves more naturally when kept in a small group rather than alone, often becoming more visible and confident, particularly around dusk, when housed with several companions of its own kind.
Where does the kuhli loach live in the wild?
This species is native to slow-moving wetland and rainforest stream habitat across Indonesia, Malaysia, and neighbouring parts of Southeast Asia, where it sifts through sand, gravel, and leaf litter for hidden food at night.
