Least Chipmunk

Tamias minimus · also called least chipmunks

Least Concern → omnivore Temperate forestMountains

Darting across a rocky mountain slope with cheek pouches bulging full of seeds, a least chipmunk pauses briefly to scan for danger before continuing toward its underground cache, the smallest chipmunk species found anywhere in North America.

Overview

The least chipmunk, Tamias minimus, is a small, wide-ranging rodent native to forest and mountain habitat across an extensive range spanning much of Canada and the western and northern United States. Its status as the smallest North American chipmunk species, remarkably broad geographic distribution, and lighter form of winter hibernation make it one of the more ecologically flexible small mammals found across the continent.

The smallest chipmunk with the biggest range

Despite being the smallest chipmunk species in North America, the least chipmunk holds one of the broadest ranges of any chipmunk, a combination of small size and wide adaptability that has let it thrive from dense forest floors to exposed, rocky mountainsides.

Status

Least Concern, widespread and abundant across suitable forest and mountain habitat throughout its extensive North American range.

Least Chipmunk: common questions

How can you tell the least chipmunk is the smallest chipmunk species?

This species is noticeably more slender and diminutive compared with several of its more familiar chipmunk relatives, a size difference confirmed through direct comparison and consistent enough that size alone can help distinguish it from most other North American chipmunk species sharing similar range.

Why does the least chipmunk have such a wide range?

This species has one of the broadest geographic ranges of any North American chipmunk in part because of its ability to occupy an enormous variety of habitats, from dense forest understory to open, rocky mountain terrain, allowing it to thrive across ecologically diverse regions of the continent.

Does the least chipmunk hibernate all winter without waking?

No, this species enters a lighter form of hibernation than some other rodents, periodically waking during the winter months to feed on food stores it cached in its burrow beforehand, rather than remaining continuously dormant for the entire season.

How does the least chipmunk carry food back to its burrow?

This species uses expandable cheek pouches to carry seeds, nuts, and other food, allowing it to transport a substantial quantity back to its underground caches in a single foraging trip rather than making many smaller trips.
