Least Tern

Sternula antillarum · also called least terns

Near Threatened ↓ carnivore Coasts & shorelines

A male least tern circles above a sandy river bar with a small fish held tightly in his bill, presenting it to a waiting female in a courtship ritual that plays out season after season on some of the last remaining open sandbars left along the river.

Overview

The least tern, Sternula antillarum, is the smallest tern species in North America, nesting in small colonies on open beaches and river sandbars across parts of the United States. Its fish-offering courtship display and dependence on increasingly rare open sand habitat make it one of the more behaviourally charming yet genuinely vulnerable seabirds on the continent.

Courtship measured in fish

Long before any nest is built, a least tern pair’s relationship is already being negotiated one freshly caught fish at a time, a small but telling gift that carries real weight in deciding whether courtship succeeds.

Status

Near Threatened, with some populations federally endangered — declining due to river damming, flow alteration, and beach disturbance.

Least Tern: common questions

How does a male least tern attract a mate?

A male least tern performs an aerial fish flight, carrying a freshly caught fish in flight and presenting it directly to a female as part of an elaborate courtship display, a behaviour that likely signals the male's hunting ability and overall fitness as a potential mate.

Why are some least tern populations endangered?

Certain least tern populations, particularly those nesting along major interior rivers and in California, are federally listed as endangered due to significant habitat loss from river damming and flow alteration, along with beach disturbance affecting the open sand and river sandbars the species depends on for nesting.

Does the least tern only nest on natural beaches?

Not always — while a least tern typically nests in small, loose colonies directly on open sand or gravel beaches, some populations have adapted to also use flat gravel rooftops in urban areas as an alternative nesting surface, particularly where natural beach habitat has become scarce or heavily disturbed.

How small is the least tern compared to other terns?

The least tern is the smallest tern species found in North America, considerably smaller than most of its tern relatives, a size difference reflected directly in its common name.
