The luna moth spends its entire adult life without eating a single thing — it has no working mouth at all, running purely on energy stored back when it was a caterpillar. It lives only about a week, just long enough to find a mate before its long, spiralling wing-tails have done their job confusing hunting bats.

Overview

Luna moths live in deciduous forests of eastern North America, wherever suitable host trees such as walnut, hickory, and birch grow. Adults have a wingspan of about 9–11 cm, pale lime-green with long, twisting hindwing tails.

How can the luna moth survive without eating as an adult?

All the energy it needs as an adult comes entirely from fat reserves built up during its caterpillar stage, when it feeds voraciously on tree leaves for several weeks before spinning a cocoon. Because an adult luna moth has only vestigial mouthparts that cannot actually take in food, this stored fat has to last for its entire remaining lifespan, which is why the adult stage is so brief, typically about a week, focused entirely on finding a mate before its limited energy supply is exhausted. This trade-off, sacrificing a long adult life for a shorter but highly efficient reproductive window, is shared by several other large silk moth species.

What are the long tails on a luna moth's wings for?

Researchers studying luna moths and their long-tailed relatives have found strong evidence that the twisting, ribbon-like tails on the hindwings serve as an anti-predator defence specifically against echolocating bats, one of the moth's main nocturnal predators. As the moth flies, the tails flutter and spin in a way that produces an unusually strong and confusing echo, which appears to divert a bat's sonar-guided attack toward the tails themselves rather than the moth's more vital body and head, giving the moth a much-improved chance of escaping with only minor wing damage rather than being caught outright.

How does a male luna moth find a mate if it can't smell food?

Since males have no interest in locating food at all, their large, elaborately feathered antennae are dedicated almost entirely to detecting pheromones, chemical scent signals released into the air by a receptive female from her location. These antennae are extraordinarily sensitive, capable of detecting even extremely faint concentrations of the right pheromone molecules carried on the wind from a considerable distance away, allowing a male to navigate through the darkness toward a specific female he cannot see, hear, or otherwise locate through any other sense.

Why is the luna moth's colour such a pale, translucent green?

Its soft lime-green wing colour blends effectively with fresh leaves in the deciduous forest canopy where it rests motionless during the day, providing camouflage against birds and other daytime predators while it waits for nightfall to become active. The slightly translucent quality of the wings may also help reduce the sharpness of its outline against dappled light filtering through leaves, further reducing the chance of a resting moth being spotted, and this combination of colour and translucency is a common camouflage strategy among large moths that must survive an entire vulnerable daytime resting period exposed on foliage.
