The panther chameleon is the animal most people picture when they hear “chameleon” — a slow, swivel-eyed lizard that changes colour. It is native only to Madagascar, and the males are the most spectacularly coloured of all 200-odd chameleon species.
Overview
Panther chameleons live in the warm, humid forests, plantations, and scrub of northern and eastern Madagascar, usually within a few metres of the ground in bushes and small trees. They are solitary and territorial: males will not tolerate another male in sight and settle disputes with colour displays, gaping, and occasionally biting. Populations from different regions have distinctive colour schemes, known to keepers as “locales.”
Built for ambush from a branch
Almost every feature of a chameleon is a specialisation for hunting insects from a stationary perch:
- Eyes in turret-like lids that move independently, letting the animal scan a full sphere without moving its body. When it spots prey, both eyes swing forward for stereo vision to range the target.
- A ballistic tongue stored folded over a spike of cartilage and launched by elastic tissue, hitting prey in a fraction of a second.
- Zygodactyl feet — toes fused into two opposing bundles that clamp a twig like pincers — and a prehensile tail used as a fifth limb.
- A narrow, leaf-shaped body that sways slightly as it walks, mimicking a wind-blown leaf.
Colour
The famous colour change is not camouflage in the way cartoons suggest. Panther chameleons signal mood and intent with colour — bright and high-contrast when displaying to rivals or courting, dark when cold or stressed — and adjust brightness to manage body heat. The mechanism is structural: a lattice of nanocrystals in the skin that the animal physically stretches and relaxes to tune which colours it reflects.
Reproduction and life cycle
After mating, a female’s resting colour changes to a dark background with orange bars, a signal that she has rejected further males. She lays a clutch of 10 to 40 eggs in a burrow she digs in the ground, then abandons them. The eggs incubate for six months to a year before tiny chameleons hatch. Females often die within a season or two, worn down by producing several large clutches; males live longer.
Threats and conservation
The panther chameleon is listed as Least Concern. It tolerates disturbed and agricultural land well, remains common across its range, and — unusually for a heavily traded reptile — its wild populations appear stable. Madagascar exports tens of thousands each year for the pet trade under a quota system. The longer-term concern is the island-wide loss of forest, which will eventually shrink even an adaptable species’ range.

Why do chameleons change colour?
Mostly to communicate and to control temperature, not to hide. A calm panther chameleon sits in blue-greens; an excited or aggressive male flares bright red, yellow, and white; a submissive or stressed one goes dark. They also darken to absorb heat in the morning and lighten to reflect it when hot. Camouflage is a secondary benefit of their resting colours.
How does the colour change actually work?
Panther chameleons have a layer of skin cells called iridophores containing an orderly lattice of guanine nanocrystals. By actively changing the spacing of that lattice, the chameleon changes which wavelengths of light it reflects — tighter spacing reflects blue, wider spacing reflects yellow and red. This is structural colour, the same physics as a soap bubble, and it is why the shifts are so fast and so bright.
How far can a chameleon shoot its tongue?
A panther chameleon can project its tongue one and a half to two times its body length in about 20 milliseconds, with an acceleration many times that of gravity. The tongue tip forms a suction cup and is coated in mucus 400 times more viscous than human saliva, so prey sticks and is reeled back in.
Are panther chameleons good pets?
They are among the most kept chameleons because the males are so colourful, but they are demanding — needing tall planted enclosures, precise heat and UVB lighting, high humidity, live insects, and no handling. Wild-caught imports often arrive stressed and parasitised, so captive-bred animals are strongly preferred.
