Portuguese Man o' War

The Portuguese man o’ war is one of the ocean’s strangest creatures — a purple-and-blue “jellyfish” that is not a jellyfish, not a single animal, and cannot swim. It is a floating cooperative of specialised organisms, drifting on the wind with a curtain of stinging tentacles hanging beneath it.
Overview
Portuguese men o’ war live at the surface of warm oceans worldwide, most abundantly in tropical and subtropical waters. They cannot control where they go: the gas-filled float works as a sail, and the colony is blown across the sea by the wind, often in large flotillas. Onshore winds regularly drive them onto beaches in mass strandings of hundreds or thousands, where their tentacles remain a hazard long after the animals die.
A colony, not an individual
The man o’ war is a siphonophore. It begins as a single larva, which then buds off many units called zooids, all genetically identical. Instead of forming organs, the zooids develop into four distinct body types:
- The float (pneumatophore) — a single large translucent bladder, filled partly with carbon monoxide, that keeps the colony at the surface and catches the wind.
- The tentacles (dactylozooids) — long, contractile stingers, usually about 10 m but sometimes 30 m or more, coated in venomous nematocysts, that paralyse prey.
- The digestive zooids (gastrozooids) — polyps that spread over captured prey and digest it, sharing the nutrients with the whole colony.
- The reproductive zooids (gonozooids) — which release eggs or sperm into the sea.
No zooid can survive on its own. The whole assembly behaves as one organism.
Hunting
The tentacles hang like a drift net. When a small fish or crustacean brushes them, thousands of stinging capsules fire, injecting venom that quickly paralyses the prey. The tentacle then contracts, hauling the catch up to the digestive polyps. The venom that subdues a fish also produces the man o’ war’s notorious sting in humans.
Reproduction
Colonies are male or female, and reproduction is thought to happen in autumn when large numbers gather. They spawn into the water, and the fertilised eggs develop into new larvae that each bud a fresh colony. Details are still poorly known because the process has rarely been observed.
Man o’ war and people
The species is Not Evaluated and abundant, with no conservation concern. Its significance to people is as a beach and swimming hazard across the Atlantic and Indo-Pacific — lifeguards fly warning flags during man o’ war “seasons,” and stings are common. Correct first aid for Physalia is to rinse with seawater (not fresh water, and not vinegar, which can worsen this species’ sting), carefully remove tentacle fragments, and apply heat or a cold pack for the pain.

Is a Portuguese man o' war a jellyfish?
No, although it looks and stings like one. It is a siphonophore — a colonial organism made of many small units called zooids. Each zooid is derived from the same larva and is genetically identical, but they have developed into four completely different forms with different jobs — one big float, feeding tentacles, digestive polyps, and reproductive structures. None of the zooids can live independently; together they function as a single "individual." True jellyfish are single animals.
How dangerous is a man o' war sting?
For most people it is intensely painful but not life-threatening — red, whip-like welts that can last for days, sometimes with nausea, headache, and muscle cramps. Serious systemic reactions and, very rarely, deaths do occur, usually from an allergic response or from extensive stings on a child or someone with a heart condition. Detached tentacles washed up on the beach can still sting for hours or days after the animal is dead.
Why does a man o' war have a sail, and can it steer?
The gas-filled float acts as a sail, and the colony drifts wherever the wind pushes it — it has almost no ability to swim. It can deflate the float slightly to duck under the surface briefly, but it cannot navigate. Interestingly, individuals come in "left-handed" and "right-handed" forms, with the crest angled one way or the other, so a given wind carries some colonies to the right of the wind direction and others to the left, scattering the population rather than piling it all onto one shore.
Does anything eat a Portuguese man o' war?
A few specialists. Loggerhead sea turtles eat them, apparently unbothered by the stings. The ocean sunfish and the blanket octopus feed on them, and the blanket octopus even tears off man o' war tentacles and wields them as weapons. Two molluscs — the violet sea snail and the blue sea slug (Glaucus) — float at the surface and graze directly on the colony, storing its stinging cells for their own defence.
