The seahorse is one of the strangest fish in the sea: it swims standing up, moves at a crawl, wears armour instead of scales, holds on to plants with its tail, and leaves the pregnancy to the male. Every one of those oddities is a solution to living as a small, slow ambush predator in a bed of swaying seagrass.
Overview
Seahorses live in shallow, sheltered coastal habitats around much of the world’s warm and temperate coasts — seagrass meadows, mangrove roots, estuaries, and coral rubble. Hippocampus kuda, the common or spotted seahorse, is a widespread Indo-Pacific species and a typical example of the group. Seahorses are weak swimmers and stay within tiny home ranges, sometimes just a few square metres, often keeping the same anchoring perch for weeks.
Built for stillness
- Upright posture and a prehensile tail. Instead of a tail fin, a seahorse has a gripping tail it wraps around a stem to hold station in a current while it hunts.
- Bony plates. The body is encased in interlocking rings of bone under the skin, making the seahorse hard to eat and hard for predators to digest.
- Independent eyes. Each eye swivels on its own, so the seahorse can track a prey item with one eye and scan for danger with the other.
- A pipette snout. The fused, tubular jaw is a suction tool, not a biting one.
The slowest hunter
Seahorses are ambush feeders. A seahorse approaches a copepod so slowly and smoothly that the prey — which has fast escape reflexes — does not detect the pressure wave, then the seahorse jerks its head up and snaps the animal into its snout in about a millisecond. Because it has no stomach to store food, a seahorse eats more or less continuously through the day.
Courtship and male pregnancy
Seahorses form pair bonds, in many species lasting a breeding season or longer, and reinforce them each morning with a greeting “dance” of colour changes, spiralling, and tail-linking. When the female is ready she injects her eggs into a brood pouch on the male’s tail. He fertilises and carries them, supplying oxygen and nutrients and adjusting the pouch fluid, until he gives birth to a brood of tiny independent young. The male can be pregnant again within hours.
Threats and conservation
Hippocampus kuda is listed as Vulnerable, and seahorses as a group are among the most heavily exploited fish by number. They are dried for traditional medicine and souvenirs, sold live for aquariums, and caught incidentally in shrimp trawls, while their coastal habitats are being cleared and degraded. All seahorses are listed on CITES Appendix II to regulate international trade, and conservation groups work with fishing communities on catch limits, no-take zones, and habitat restoration.

Is a seahorse really a fish?
Yes. Seahorses are bony fish in the family Syngnathidae, alongside pipefish and seadragons. They breathe with gills, have a swim bladder, and are propelled by fins — the giveaways are just hidden by the upright posture, the horse-shaped head, and the bony-plated body in place of scales. There are roughly 45 species, all in the genus Hippocampus.
How does male pregnancy work in seahorses?
During an elaborate courtship dance the female transfers her eggs through a tube into a pouch on the front of the male's tail. He fertilises them inside the pouch, then nourishes and oxygenates the developing young through a placenta-like tissue lining, regulating the fluid's salinity as they grow. After two to four weeks he pumps out dozens to over a thousand fully formed miniature seahorses. The female has no further role once the eggs are transferred.
How do seahorses eat without teeth or a stomach?
A seahorse has no teeth and no true stomach. It hunts by stealth — drifting up to a copepod almost invisibly, then snapping its long tubular snout upward and sucking the prey in whole with a sharp intake of water, a strike that takes about a millisecond. Because it cannot store food, it must eat almost constantly, consuming dozens of small crustaceans an hour.
Why are seahorses threatened?
Three pressures at once. They are caught in vast numbers — tens of millions a year — for use in traditional medicine, dried as curios, and for the aquarium trade. They are also swept up as bycatch in shrimp trawls. And the shallow seagrass beds, mangroves, and reefs they depend on are among the most heavily damaged coastal habitats. Their slow movement, small home ranges, and low reproductive output leave them little resilience.
