Shoebill

The shoebill looks like it belongs to another era — a five-foot slate-grey bird standing statue-still in a papyrus swamp, staring down a bill shaped like a wooden clog. It is one of Africa’s most sought-after birds to see, and one of its stranger evolutionary experiments.
Overview
Shoebills live in vast freshwater wetlands — papyrus and reed swamps, flooded grassland, and marsh — in a band across central and eastern Africa, with strongholds in the Sudd of South Sudan and the swamps of Uganda and Zambia. They favour areas with poorly oxygenated water, because that forces air-breathing fish to the surface where the shoebill can reach them. They are solitary and territorial, and pairs will feed on opposite ends of the same marsh.
The bill
The shoebill’s enormous bill is its defining tool: broad, deep, ending in a hooked nail, with razor edges. It is built for seizing large, slippery, struggling prey in one grab and for cutting it up. The bird also uses the bill in social display, clattering the mandibles together in a rapid, machine-gun-like rattle when greeting a mate at the nest.
Hunting by ambush
A hunting shoebill is a lesson in stillness. It picks a spot at the edge of open water and freezes, sometimes for hours, watching. When a lungfish rises to gulp air, the shoebill throws its whole body forward in a lunge — the “collapse” — driving the open bill down over the prey and scooping up fish, water, and vegetation together. It then tips its head to drain the water, flicks out the weeds, often nips off the prey’s head, and swallows.
Reproduction
Shoebills nest on the ground or on floating vegetation, building a large platform in a well-hidden spot. The female lays two or three eggs, and both parents incubate them and, in the heat, carry water in the bill to cool the eggs and, later, the chicks. In practice the oldest chick monopolises the food and its siblings rarely survive, so despite laying several eggs a pair usually fledges just one young bird every few years.
Threats and conservation
The shoebill is Vulnerable and declining, with a total population probably under 10,000. The threats are habitat loss and disturbance as swamps are drained, burned, and converted for agriculture and grazing; capture of chicks and eggs for the illegal international bird trade, where a single shoebill can fetch a very high price; nest disturbance by fishers and cattle herders, which causes parents to abandon eggs; and drowning in fishing nets. Its low reproductive rate leaves little margin, and conservation depends on protecting large intact wetlands and working with local communities to safeguard nests.

Is the shoebill related to storks or pelicans?
Neither closely. Despite looking like a stork and being called "shoebill stork," genetic studies place it closest to pelicans and the hamerkop, in its own family, Balaenicipitidae, with a single species. The huge bill is a case of convergent evolution toward the same fish-catching solution.
What does a shoebill eat?
Mostly large fish, especially air-breathing lungfish and catfish, which it can catch when they come to the surface in the oxygen-poor swamp water. It also takes eels, water snakes, frogs, monitor lizards, turtles, young crocodiles, and even waterfowl and, reportedly, newborn antelope calves that stray into the marsh. Prey is often decapitated with the sharp-edged bill before being swallowed, and vegetation is spat out first.
Why does the shoebill stand still for so long?
It is an ambush hunter in water where fish must surface to breathe. By standing utterly motionless, sometimes for hours, at a promising spot, the shoebill waits for a lungfish to break the surface, then strikes in a fast, full-body lunge called a "collapse," folding down onto the prey and scooping it up in a mass of water and weeds. Patience is the whole strategy.
Do shoebills really raise only one chick?
Usually. A pair lays two or three eggs as insurance, but in almost all cases only the oldest, strongest chick survives — it out-competes and is aggressive toward its siblings, and the parents focus their care on it. The younger chicks typically die of starvation or neglect within days. This makes the effective reproductive rate very low and slows any population recovery.
