American Alligator vs Spectacled Caiman
Alligators and caimans are close cousins in the same family, Alligatoridae, and a small caiman really does look like a small alligator. But alligators are animals of the southeastern United States and eastern China, while caimans belong to Central and South America, and the two differ in size, armour, and disposition.

Alligator vs Caiman: common questions
Is a caiman just a small alligator?
They are close relatives in the same family and look similar, but they are different animals. Caimans are a group of six species native to Latin America; alligators are two species, one American and one Chinese. Most caimans are smaller than the American alligator and have a bony ridge across the snout and heavier body armour.
Which is more dangerous to people?
The American alligator, simply because it grows large enough to be a genuine threat and lives alongside dense human populations in the United States. Spectacled caimans are smaller and rarely dangerous, though a large black caiman in the Amazon is as dangerous as a big crocodile.
How do you tell an alligator from a caiman?
Range is the quickest guide: alligators in the USA and China, caimans in Latin America. Up close, a spectacled caiman has a bony bridge between its eyes resembling spectacles, a narrower snout, and often a more olive or yellowish colour than the dark grey-black of an American alligator.
