Head to head
Asiatic Toad vs Common Toad
An Asiatic toad and a common toad are both large, warty, widely distributed true toads occupying similar ecological roles on opposite sides of the Eurasian landmass, yet each has become culturally significant in a completely different way.

Asiatic Toad vs Common Toad: common questions
Are the Asiatic toad and common toad the same species?
No, they are separate species occupying similar ecological roles on different continents, with the Asiatic toad native to China, Korea, and Russia's far east, and the common toad native across most of Europe, though both are large, warty true toads with broadly similar defensive skin secretions.
Why is the Asiatic toad collected for traditional medicine but not the common toad?
The Asiatic toad's dried skin secretions, known as chan su, have a long specific history of use in traditional Chinese medicine within its native East Asian range, while the common toad, despite producing broadly similar defensive skin secretions, has not developed the same regional tradition of medicinal collection across Europe.
Why do common toads need road tunnels during migration?
Common toads undertake mass seasonal migrations back to the specific ponds where they were born to breed each spring, and because these migrations often cross roads in large numbers, many European countries have installed dedicated toad tunnels or introduced seasonal road closures to reduce the significant traffic mortality that would otherwise occur.
