Brown Bear vs Western Gorilla
A grizzly (brown) bear and a silverback gorilla will never meet — one lives in the forests and tundra of the northern hemisphere, the other in central African rainforest — but the matchup is a perennial internet argument. It pits a massive, well-armed omnivore that regularly kills large prey against the most powerful primate, which almost never fights to kill.

Who would win, a grizzly bear or a gorilla?
Almost every expert gives it to the grizzly. It is much heavier, it is an experienced predator that kills large animals for food, it has claws and a powerful bite, and its fat and fur cushion the gorilla’s blows. The gorilla’s strength and bite could hurt the bear, but it has no way to deliver a killing attack.
Is a gorilla stronger than a bear?
In pure upper-body and grip strength, a silverback gorilla is remarkable — several times stronger than a person and able to bend thick bamboo and branches. But a large bear is far heavier and stronger overall, and strength alone does not decide a fight; body mass, weapons, and the willingness and skill to use them lethally matter more, and the bear leads on all three.
Could a gorilla ever beat a bear?
Only in a narrow scenario — a smaller black bear or a young grizzly, caught off guard, might be driven off by a large silverback. Against a full-grown brown bear, and especially a coastal or Kodiak bear, the size and combat gap is too large. And of course the two never actually encounter each other in the wild.
