Komodo Dragon vs Crocodile: common questions
Could a Komodo dragon kill a crocodile?
Only a small or already-compromised one. Against a healthy adult saltwater crocodile the size and armour gap is overwhelming. Dragons will, however, scavenge dead crocodiles and can dominate much smaller crocodilians.
Is the Komodo dragon venomous?
Yes. It has venom glands in the lower jaw that release a cocktail lowering blood pressure and preventing clotting, so bitten prey bleeds heavily and weakens. The old "septic bacteria in the mouth" idea is now considered a minor factor at most compared with venom and blood loss.
Which is the bigger animal overall?
The saltwater crocodile, by a wide margin, and it is the largest living reptile and the largest terrestrial and riparian predator on the planet. The Komodo dragon is the largest lizard but is small next to a full-grown saltie.
