Lions and gorillas never meet — lions hunt the open savanna, gorillas live in dense rainforest — but the matchup is one of the internet’s favourite hypotheticals. One is a cooperative apex predator; the other is a plant-eating giant that fights only in self-defence, but fights hard.

Lion vs Gorilla: common questions
Who would win in a fight, a lion or a gorilla?
Most experts favour a single lion. Lions kill large animals for a living and have a practised technique — a suffocating bite to the throat — plus claws and greater speed and agility. A gorilla is extraordinarily strong and can bite and throw a lion around, but it has no lethal fighting method because it never needs one in the wild. A gorilla could still inflict serious wounds, and a group of lions would win easily.
Is a gorilla stronger than a lion?
In raw pulling and lifting strength, yes — a silverback gorilla is estimated to be several times stronger than a human and stronger than a lion in that sense, and it has a more powerful bite. But strength is not the same as killing ability. The lion’s advantage is that its whole body and behaviour are specialised for dispatching large prey quickly.
Do lions and gorillas ever encounter each other?
Essentially never. Their ranges barely overlap, and where they do, the habitats are different — lions avoid dense forest and gorillas rarely leave it. There is no documented case of a wild fight between the two.
