Sulphur-Crested Cockatoo vs Palm Cockatoo
A sulphur-crested cockatoo and a palm cockatoo share the same cockatoo family and the same striking mobile head crest, but the two species have gone in almost opposite directions in terms of rarity, colouration, and the specific behaviours that made each one famous.

Sulphur-Crested Cockatoo vs Palm Cockatoo: common questions
Which cockatoo is rarer, the sulphur-crested or the palm cockatoo?
The palm cockatoo is considerably rarer, restricted to rainforest habitat in New Guinea and Australia's Cape York and classified as Near Threatened, while the sulphur-crested cockatoo is common and widespread across a much broader range spanning Australia, New Guinea, and several nearby islands.
Is it true that palm cockatoos use tools?
Yes, male palm cockatoos fashion a stick or seed pod into a drumstick and use it to drum rhythmically against a hollow tree as part of a courtship display, a genuinely rare documented case of tool manufacture and use among birds that has no equivalent documented in the sulphur-crested cockatoo.
Which cockatoo is more likely to be seen near people?
The sulphur-crested cockatoo is far more likely to be encountered near human settlement, having adapted well to urban and suburban environments across parts of Australia, including learning to open garbage bins for food, while the palm cockatoo remains largely confined to remote rainforest habitat away from significant human development.
