Ranked by how many humans they kill each year, the most dangerous animals are mostly small. The mosquito alone kills more people annually than every large predator combined, while the animals that scare us most — sharks, wolves, big cats — are responsible for a tiny fraction of deaths. Figures are rough annual estimates.

By spreading malaria, dengue, yellow fever, and other diseases, the mosquito kills more people than any other animal — by a huge margin. Malaria alone, carried by Anopheles mosquitoes, accounts for most of those deaths, the majority of them young children in Africa.
