The olm is a salamander that has spent millions of years in the dark. It lives only in the water-filled caves of southeastern Europe’s limestone country, and its whole biology — the blindness, the pale skin, the near-immortal patience — is an adaptation to a world with no light and very little food.
Overview
Olms are found exclusively in the subterranean waters of the Dinaric karst, a band of soluble limestone running down the eastern Adriatic coast. They inhabit flooded cave passages, underground rivers, and the water table itself, and are occasionally flushed to the surface by floods. Because these cave systems are isolated from one another, olm populations are highly localised and genetically distinct.
A body shaped by darkness
The olm is often held up as a textbook case of adaptation to cave life:
- Reduced eyes and depigmented skin. With no light, vision and camouflage are useless. The eyes regress and the skin loses pigment, leaving it a translucent pinkish-white — though an olm kept in light will slowly darken.
- Retained larval form. Like the axolotl, the olm is neotenic: it keeps its feathery external gills, a fin-like tail, and other juvenile features for its entire life and never transforms into a land animal.
- Enhanced non-visual senses. Smell, taste, touch, pressure sensing, hearing, and even electroreception and magnetoreception are all sharpened to navigate and hunt in the black.
- An elongated, eel-like body with small, weak limbs, suited to slow movement through submerged passages.
Diet and metabolism
Cave water carries little food, so the olm is built for scarcity. It eats small invertebrates — cave shrimp, isopods, snails, insect larvae — swallowing them whole, and it can store large amounts of fat and nutrients. When prey runs out it simply waits, drastically lowering its metabolism and, if necessary, breaking down its own body tissue, and it can persist for as long as a decade between meals.
Reproduction
Olms breed slowly and rarely. Females usually lay eggs, a few dozen at a time, hidden in a rock crevice and guarded by the mother, with development taking several months. A black subspecies from one Slovenian region, the black olm (Proteus anguinus parkelj), has functional eyes and dark skin and lives closer to the surface. Sexual maturity comes at around 15 years.
Threats and conservation
The olm is listed as Vulnerable. Its greatest threat is water pollution: because karst landscapes drain quickly and with little filtering, agricultural chemicals, sewage, and industrial waste from the surface pass rapidly into the caves. Groundwater extraction, quarrying, and dam construction also damage habitat. The species is legally protected across its range, and it has become a conservation symbol in Slovenia, where it features on a coin and is displayed at Postojna Cave.
Olm: common questions
Why is the olm called the "human fish"?
Its Slovene and Croatian name, "človeška ribica," translates as "human fish" or "little human fish," a reference to its pale pinkish, flesh-toned skin, which people thought resembled human skin. It is not a fish — it is a fully aquatic salamander — but the name has stuck for centuries. Historically, olms washed out of caves by floods were also thought to be baby dragons.
Can the olm see?
Barely, and not with its eyes. An olm's eyes are present but stop developing early and are covered by skin, so they can perceive little more than the presence of light. Living in total darkness, the animal instead relies on an acute sense of smell, sensitivity to water chemistry and pressure changes, the ability to detect weak electric fields, and light-sensing cells spread across the whole skin surface.
How can an olm survive 10 years without food?
By doing almost nothing. Olms have an extremely low metabolic rate, move very little, and can slow their bodies further in hard times, reabsorbing their own tissues and living off fat reserves. Cave food is scarce and unpredictable, so the olm's strategy is to eat heavily when prey is available and then wait, sometimes for years, for the next meal.
How long do olms live?
Exceptionally long for an amphibian. Studies of a long-monitored population in France estimate an average lifespan of about 70 years and a maximum likely over 100 — far beyond what their body size would predict. Slow metabolism, a stable cave environment, late maturity (around 15–16 years), and few predators all contribute.
